A week long intensive training on “Developing Geospatial Applications for Android Devices” was organized during 23-28 Feb 2014, in Kathmandu University by Geospatial Lab with support from Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering (DCGE), Kathmandu University and International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).  The training was a part of activity of the project “Strengthening Geospatial infrastructure and Research Capacity at Kathmandu University” (GIRC-Geomatics).

Assistant Prof. Prachanda Man Pradhan, Head of Department DCGE inaugurated the program expressing his best wishes. Geomatics Program Coordinator, Mr. Subash Ghimire presented welcome speech. He highlighted the need of trainings to boost confidence in students and encouraged students to utilize the opportunity.

This training was targeted to Fourth Year Students of Geomatics Engineering who were interested in Geospatial programming using Android platform. By the end of the training students learnt basic android programming topics like Android platform, Android Development Kit (ADK), Graphical User Interface (GUI), SQLite Database, with focus on using GPS and proximity sensor, using online and offline OSM Data and maps. After a week of intensive training from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, students were confident to present on innovative concepts for mini-project. They will spend one week on developing the concept to geo-enabled android applications. Its main objective is to encourage students to apply knowledge and skills they have learnt during the training. In the closing program proposed to be on Feb 9, students will demonstrate their apps.
